City of Lights

New Orleans’ sister city, Paris, France, is famously known as the City of Lights. While many could attribute this title to the sparkling Eiffel Tower, the origin of the name dates back to the reign of King Louis XIV. During his rule, Paris faced significant crime issues, prompting the king to hire the first police chief, La Reynie.

La Reynie's primary initiatives focused on cleaning the streets and illuminating the city with lanterns. These efforts not only enhanced the city’s cleanliness but also significantly improved safety and security. His work was recognized in 1669 for bringing “Security and Clarity to the City.”

Inspired by this history, Neighborhood Coalition’s City of Lights program aims to illuminate our community streets.
